Producing high-quality VR porn: angles matter

Alex Novak

While there are tons of variables to consider when creating and shooting VR porn, one essential element is the angle of the camera. Whether you're a budding VR film-maker or just curious about how it all works, here's a deep dive into the world of VR camera angles to see what it takes to make a video fully immersive. We'd like to give a special shout-out to user Mkramer1974 for providing the information and inspiration for this post.

Why Do Angles Matter?

If the goal of a VR porn scene is to replicate what the user would be seeing in real life, then capturing the right angles can make or break the illusion. For example, if you look up and can’t see the model’s head because it wasn’t in the shot, that would make it hard to believe you’re really having sex with her.

Similarly, angles that are too close or too distant can make the point of view feel unnatural. In some cases, the image may get blurry, making it seem like you’re Mr. Magoo while having sex. In other instances, the image may get slightly warped, so you feel like you’re wearing someone else’s goggles.

Overall, the right angle allows the user to look around and pay attention to the parts they like, while still giving the illusion of real-life sex. But, success is a bit trickier than one may realize, given how many variables are in a given scene.

The Problems With Getting the Right Angles

No matter how you look at it, a camera won’t be able to replicate the human eye perfectly. Even though we have a relatively limited field of view, our eyes are constantly moving and rendering details as we see them.

So, there are some hurdles that creators have to overcome, such as:

  • Size Differentiation - Not all models have the same height, weight, and body shape. So, angles must be adjusted to compensate for these minor differences.
  • Area of Focus - Some users may prefer to stare at a model’s tits while she’s riding, while others might want to see her gorgeous face. Others still may choose to focus on the penetration itself while ignoring everything else. So, cameras have to capture all three areas so no user is left out.
  • Shifting Perspective - Most cameras turn a 3D scene into a 2D image. VR cameras do a better job of simulating three dimensions, but they’re still relatively limited. As the model shifts closer and further away from the lens, the focus will change as well. In the middle distance, this isn’t often a problem. However, for close ups or long-distance shots, it can be a dealbreaker.

How to Maintain Consistency Across VR Porn Scenes

Here is where we get to the solution side of things. As user Mkramer1974 pointed out, there are a few ways to ensure proper immersion across all titles. Some top tips include:

Understanding the Purpose of an Angle

There’s a tendency to just try and capture the scene as flat and wide as possible so users can see everything going on. However, some positions are naturally more intimate, and many users want the ability to “make love,” not just have sex.

So, creators need to understand the point of a specific angle so they can shoot it correctly. If the goal is intimacy, the focus needs to be on the face. If the object is to see various body parts jiggling, a wider angle works best.

Overall, the point is to avoid shooting for coverage and instead shoot for realism.

Work in Ranges, Not Absolutes

When shooting a movie, actors are usually told to “hit their marks.” These marks offer the best image possible where all the various elements (camera angle, lighting, sound) work seamlessly. In porn, marks are not really used, especially when the action is getting hot and heavy.

Still, there’s a reason for using marks, and creators can come up with an acceptable range of movement to keep an angle realistic. This way, models can have some flexibility in their actions without going too far on either end of the spectrum.

The range will vary from one angle to the next, and again, the size of the model will affect the numbers. However, with a bit of practice, creators can get the best shot every time.

Use Multiple Distances When Appropriate

As we mentioned, user focus can shift from one moment to the next. So, rather than try to cater to everyone with the same angle, it’s better to have multiple distances so users have options. For example, with missionary, one angle could show the whole body and the face, while another focuses on just the top half.

Similarly, a close up of the pussy could have two angles - full view where the user can see every glorious detail, or super close, where it feels like the user’s tongue is deep inside.

Not all angles warrant this kind of approach, but having this flexibility ensures better immersion for everyone.

Matching Reality Whenever Possible

Finally, the key to capturing the best angles is to match the user’s viewpoint from wherever they are in relation to the model(s). Sometimes, creators can set the camera too far forward or back, meaning the user can’t see what they would normally see in this situation, ruining the immersion.

For example, with doggystyle, the position of the camera is crucial. Too low, and you risk cutting off her head and shoulders. Too high, and it feels like a “god’s eye view,” which is a bit too surreal for most users.

Realistically, it’s not always possible to put a camera where the user’s head would be. However, matching it as closely as you can will enhance the experience and lead to better satisfaction.
