Apple Vision Pro Highlights
Apple has shipped two generations of Vision Pro. The original, released in 2024, runs on the M2 chip. The refresh, released in late 2025, runs on the M5 chip. Same panels, same optics, same passthrough cameras, same form factor - the visual hardware is identical. What changed is that the video decoding pipeline now perfectly matches high-fidelity displays and high-resolution VR cameras. The M5 Vision Pro has substantially expanded supported resolutions up to 16K at 120Hz. Speaking of controllers AVP takes an unconventional approach to use hand tracking and eye tracking instead, which some find inconvenient. PSVR2 Sense controllers will work with it, as well as the PS5 DualSense wireless controller.
Passthrough
Apple's color passthrough is the best on the market for SLR Passthrough. It uses high-resolution stereo RGB cameras, with a dedicated silicon chip (the R1 chip) handling sensor fusion. The displayed image of your room looks roughly 3-4x denser than that of the Quest 3. Your couch, your floor, your bedside lamp, all visible at near-real-world fidelity, with the performer present and three-dimensional in front of you.
This is what mixed reality has been promising since the term was coined, and Vision Pro is currently the only consumer headset that can show it at that level. If you've never tried AI Passthrough on a Vision Pro, you genuinely haven't seen what the technology is capable of.
Others
A Vision Pro session on the original headset runs about two hours on the external battery. The M5 extends that meaningfully.
Weight is a genuine factor compared to a Quest 3. The headset sits more firmly on the face, and the strap distributes mass differently. Many users find the Dual Loop Band (included in the box) more comfortable for longer use than the default Solo Knit. It's also true that some users report it's too heavy on their head.
AVP uses MV-HEVC as its standard for 3D video, rather than the side-by-side video packaging used by all other headsets.
Apple Vision Pro also records spatial video that can be uploaded straight to DeoVR and can be watched on any other headset.
