Headset popularity on SLR over the past three years
SLR’s data team has produced fascinating information about the popularity of various headsets from 2021 to the present day (2023) based on raw data from over one million unique VR headsets. Click through to see the full infographic and learn about the popularity of the current range of VR headsets.
Clearly, the Quest 2 is by far the dominant headset among SLR users, with two-thirds of all SLR users using this VR headset. The Oculus Rift comes in a distant second, making up 14.5% of users, followed by other PCVR users on the HTC Vive and Valve Index, and 4.7% still using the old Quest 1 headset.
However, while the number of people using the Rift has declined over time, the Quest 2 has increased year on year, showing the increasing and long-lasting popularity of this affordable standalone headset.
The highly-rated Pico 4 has made a relatively strong impact since its release in late 2022, making up 1.3% of all users, far outweighing the expensive but equally powerful Meta Quest Pro headset, which was released around the same time.
This could be due to the Pico 4 offering color passthrough, a feature which is becoming hugely popular with SLR users. The Meta Quest Pro also offers color passthrough, but at a much higher price point.
Of course, this is a snapshot of the current state of play in the VR world. We expect things to look different in the coming months and years, particularly with the eagerly-awaited launch of Meta’s Quest 3 headset, not to mention the PSVR 2 or the upcoming Apple VR headset.
