Although SLR makes it incredibly easy to enjoy, VR porn is still a complicated new video format like no other. In order to bring you the absolute best, we have a few technical standards:

For those curious about what these standards mean, here’s how it all works.

How it works

Resolution

Resolution is a measurement of visual detail by pixel count. Videos are recorded with a certain resolution and can be viewed up to that resolution as long as the device used is capable of displaying it. This measurement applies to both the video itself AND the device used to project it

For example, consider a video recorded in 1080p. You play it on a screen that has a maximum resolution 720p. 

  • The best resolution you will see is 720p. 
  • This screen cannot project a higher resolution because it does not have enough pixels to fully display it. 

Conversely, let’s say you play the same video on a screen with a maximum resolution of 4096p. 

  • The best resolution you will see is still only 1080p. 
  • This screen is capable of showing more detail, but the video itself does not contain any more detail than 1080p. 
  • You would need a video recorded at 4096p or more to get the most out of this screen.

Matching video quality with hardware ability is crucial for the best experience. Higher resolution is generally better in both cases, because the lower number is the limiting factor. 

For VR videos, we use a simple shorthand to describe resolution. If each eye can see 4000 pixels, we call it 4K. If each eye gets 5000 pixels it’s 5K, and so on. By this metric, the current standard for VR porn videos is 8K. 

Framerate

Framrate is the measurement of how quickly images (called frames) are projected. It’s measured over time, so a higher number means a faster frame rate. The standard unit is called frames per second, or FPS, refresh rate or sometimes Hertz (Hz). FPS and Hz are the same measurement but FPS is more specific to video. There’s some gray area, but “refresh rate” generally refers to hardware measurement and to the screen being used for viewing, whereas “framerate” generally refers to the media being viewed. A video has a framerate, but a screen has a refresh rate.

Much like we described resolution above, framerate can be limited at both ends: recording and projecting. 

For example, consider a video recorded at 60 FPS:

  • If you watch it on a screen that can only display 30 FPS, the maximum framerate you will see is 30 FPS.
  • The screen cannot display frames any faster, despite the video having more frames to show.

Conversely, let’s say you watch the same video on a screen capable of 120 FPS.

  • The maximum framerate you will get is 60 FPS. 
  • The screen cannot add more frames to the video. 
  • You would need a video recorded at 120 FPS or higher to get the most out of this screen.

A typical Hollywood film is recorded at 24 FPS-- this is the standard set by the movie industry. A video game is often projected at 30 or 60 FPS. More pictures per second means more information for your eyes to interpret. So the higher the framerate, the more realistic and smooth the video will feel to your eyes. Our minimum standard framerate is 60 FPS. However, many of our videos are available at 90 FPS and 120 FPS

Field of View

Field of View (FOV) is the measurement of viewable space that’s able to be seen by your eyes. The standard unit of measurement for FOV is degrees. No headset on the market is yet capable of making use of the human eye's full field of view, but we are getting close. 

Bitrate

Bitrate is exactly what it sounds like: the rate of bits. It’s the speed at which data is transferred. The standard unit of measurement for bitrate is bits per second or Megabits per second (Mbps). If a bitrate is high, picture quality is better, but more data needs to be transferred. If it is low, picture quality is reduced, but less data is required and file size is smaller. Bitrate and compression work together to optimize video streaming for everyone, regardless of internet connection or hardware capability. We use a variable bitrate, which means the bitrate will fluctuate to balance internet speed, hardware capability and video quality in order to provide an optimal experience. Codecs

Codecs make files smaller for easy storage or faster transmission, and then larger again when you want to play them. A codec is a method of file compression, and it works together with bitrates to optimize video streaming. Codecs are complex math functions. Periodically, new or improved codecs are invented that handle video compression in a useful way. Right now, h.265 is the standard codec and AV1 is a compelling new alternative
