[PSA] No camera used in VR porn shoots in 6K or 7K
You should be aware that no camera currently used in VR porn can shoot in 6K or 7K.
The ZCam K1 Pro and K2 Pro and Go Pro camera rigs are capable of a maximum 5400x2700px. Everything else is upscaled with no value to the end-user. You can check with your favorite VR content producer to find out the resolution details.
You might disagree, saying there's a clear difference in visual quality from different producers, but this is not because of the resolution, rather because of other factors.
For example, one “6K” producer shoots with very good light. Their excellent image quality comes from the light not because of 6K. Originally, the scene was shot in 5400x2700.
There is one "7K" producer now and we expect the K2 Pro is used to shoot these videos. It has a different sensor than the one in the K1 used for "6K" videos, while having the same 2700x2700 output for each eye. There will be more producers using this camera once lockdown is over. Everything will be released in the original 5K resolution.
To give a little more explanation: the K2 Pro sensor's RAW capture is 3696x2772, but only 2700x2700 can be effectively used, as shown on the photo below. No matter how wide you make the original capture, it will still be cut to 2700 pixels vertically.
This means that the term "6K" or "7K" resolution is simply decorative, it doesn't hold any real value.
Having these videos in 5K will not change the perceived quality one bit. The only outcome of using “6k” or “7k” videos is that you will require more bandwidth and processing power to download and decode them, while having zero benefit when it comes to viewing quality.
The first SLR Originals scenes recorded on the K2 Pro are to be released in a few weeks.
